Where the savings come from

What drives contractor workers comp premium

Premium is payroll multiplied by a rate for each class of work, adjusted by your claims record. Each piece can be wrong.

Class codes

Office staff, estimators and field crews carry very different rates. Payroll filed under the wrong code is one of the most common reasons contractors overpay.

Payroll estimates

Premium is charged on estimated payroll and trued up at audit. Estimates set too high tie up cash; too low and a large audit bill follows.

Experience mod

Your experience modification rate compares your claims to others in your trade. We check it for errors and show which claims are still driving it.

Pay-as-you-go billing

Premium can be billed with each payroll run instead of a large deposit, so you pay on real payroll and the audit holds fewer surprises.

FAQ

Contractor Workers Compensation questions, answered

How is contractor workers comp calculated?

Each class of work has a rate per $100 of payroll. The carrier multiplies your payroll in each class by its rate, then adjusts the total by your experience mod and any credits or surcharges. That is why class codes and payroll accuracy matter so much.

Do I need workers comp if I only use subcontractors?

Often yes. If your subs do not carry their own workers comp and cannot show a certificate, many states treat their workers as yours, and your carrier will charge for them at audit.

Do you place workers comp in every state you are licensed in?

Aiden Risk is licensed in 16 states. In Ohio and Washington, workers compensation can only be bought from the state fund, so private carriers cannot quote it there. If you operate in either state we will tell you that up front and still review the rest of your program.
